چکیده

First-order phase transitions are characterized by a discontinuous first derivative of the Gibbs free energy, so that volumes and entropies are discontinuous. Such transitions are common in the crystalline state, but extremely rare in liquid substances and experimentally evidenced in only one pure element, phosphorus. Here we report combined in-situ Raman scattering, X-ray diffraction and density measurements that support the existence of a first-order liquid-liquid transition in sulfur at high pressures and temperatures. The transformation involves a sharp density jump between two structurally and dynamically distinct liquids. The firstorder phase transition proceeds through an initial stage of temperature induced polymerization and a final stage where the low-density liquid abruptly converts to a denser polymeric state. This unique feature is explained by competing effects of pressure and temperature.

Laughlin-liquid-Wigner-solid transition at high density in wide quantum wells.

Assuming that the phase transition between the Wigner solid and the Laughlin liquid is first-order, we compare ground-state energies to find features of the phase diagram at fixed ν. Rather than use the Coulomb interaction, we calculate the effective interaction in a square quantum well, and fit the results to a model interaction with length parameter λ roughly proportional to the width of the ...

Investigation into the temperature dependence of isotropic- nematic phase transition of Gay- Berne liquid crystals

Density functional approach was used to study the isotropic- nematic (I-N) transition and calculate the values of freezing parameters of the Gay- Berne liquid crystal model. New direct and pair correlation functions of a molecular fluid with Gay- Berne pair potential were used. These new functions were used in density functional theory as input to calculate the isotropic- nematic transition den...

Dynamic and Deformation of a liquid Droplet in a Convective Two-Dimensional Laminar Flow

The objective of this research is to develop an accurate numerical method to be used in showing the deformation of a liquid fuel droplet in a convective field. To simultaneously solve the internal liquid droplet flow field as well as the external gas phase flow field, a nonstaggered rectangular grid system without any coordinate transformation is used. Transition from the gas field to the liqui...

Polyamorphism and density anomalies in network-forming fluids: Zeroth- and first-order approximations

A molecular model of network-forming liquids has been formulated in terms of a lattice fluid in which bond formation depends strongly on molecular orientations and local density. The model has been solved in the zerothand first-order approximations for molecular and bond geometries similar to water or silica. Results are presented in the form of fluid-phase boundaries, limits of stability, and ...
